This formula is based on a combination Run Chang Wan (Formula to Moisten the Intestines) - first recorded by Shen Jin-ao (a.k.a. Shen Qian-lu) in ‘Master Shen’s Book for Revering Life’ (shen shi zun sheng shu), 1773 - and Chen Xiang Hua Qi Wan (Formula with Aquilaria to Transform the Qi), which was first recorded in the ‘Imperial Pharmacy Formulas’ (yu yao yuan fang), a compilation of effective formulas from the Yuan dynastic period (circa 1300). While both formulas are designed to treat constipation, the former focuses on the underlying cause of Blood deficiency with subsequent Dryness of the Intestines; the later treats Spleen Qi deficiency and Stomach Heat with Qi stagnation in the Stomach and Intestines.
This formula is suitable for elderly patients or those with pronounced deficiency syndromes, as it contains mostly tonifying and moistening ingredients. Thus it is generally used for patients with chronic constipation, who have concomitant signs of deficiency (fatigue, pallor, weak and thready pulse).
The regulatory requirements for Australian therapeutic goods require a series of strong warnings on the label of any herbal medicine that contains anthraquinone glycosides (a group of components with a strong laxative action), regardless of their relative proportion in relation to the other herbal ingredients. In the case of this formula, the relatively small proportion of strong laxative ingredients, together with the majority of ingredients that have tonifying and moistening actions results in a medicine that may be safely used long term in patients with the appropriate presentation.
Moistens the Intestines and opens the bowels, tonifies the Qi and promotes the normal movement of the Qi.
